Drilling with 600 m length beneath river Danube

On behalf of Bayernwerk AG, MAX STREICHER GmbH & Co. KG aA/division local network construction carried out a drilling beneath the river Danube between Thundorf and Niederalteich/Germany.

Drilling with 600 m

With a length of about 600 m this drilling is the longest one, the division local network construction has realised so far.
First, in Thundorf a horizontal drilling rig with a pulling force of 50 tons was installed. Over a distance of 500 m the drilling was carried out through rocky underground – therefore, special drilling tools for rocky conditions (mud motor) and roller bits were used. Regularly the pilot hole was checked directly  by boat trips of the Technische Hilfswerk on the Danube.
The reason for the drilling is the dismantling of overhead transmission lines, which run across the Danube and the necessary underground installation of a 20kV line. The cable conduit has a diameter of 250 mm and a wall thickness of 32.8 mm.
