Dikes, Bridges, Pumping Stations – the Expansion of the River Danube is Making Progress

As part of the “major Danube expansion project” between Straubing and Vilshofen, several construction projects are currently being carried out at the same time.

After the Metten pumping station is completed, a new sewer-culvert structure will be built in the Offenberg-Metten polder and several dike sections along the Danube river will be heaped up in a setback position. The bridge over the Schwarzach and the Metten West dike (between Metten and the motorway A3) have already been completed on this side of the Danube. In the immediate proximity, construction of the Kleinschwarzach pumping station and a three-kilometer-long dike including a 600-meter-long flood protection wall is in full progress.

On the opposite side, on the right bank of the Danube, the concrete construction of the new Steinkirchen pumping station is currently being carried out, which is scheduled to go into operation in 2024. Since its outlet runs through the existing dike, the construction sequence was planned to ensure flood protection at all times. Work is also underway on a 300 meter long flood protection wall on this side of the river.
